Calling all educators for social justice!

the beehive collective is calling all educators for social justice!

the beehive design collective is a wildly motivated, all-volunteer, art-activist collective based in eastern maine that has gained international attention for its collaboratively produced graphics campaigns (not familiar with the bees' work? visit http://www.beehivecollective.org to learn more!)

dear friends-

though the sun has barely set on the shortest day of the year, for the ever-busy beehive collective, spring is just a few quick planetary spins away.

in eager anticipation of the new life spring promises- including the completion of Mesoamerica Resiste, our most epic and long-awaited graphic release to date-we are gathering together a host of innovative educators from our adopted Philly and surrounding cities for a day of discussion, reflection, and strategizing.

please join us!

bring yourself- your experience teaching (with or without beehive materials), your critiques of beehive methods, and your suggestions and inspirations for clearer, more kick-ass education for dissent, resistance, and social justice. bring your friends, your former or current students, adult educators, classroom teachers, community organizers, and anyone else willing to climb inside our enormous, expandable thinking cap for a few hours and jam.

the bees will be in attendance to listen and give some background on our teaching strategies past and present, which have included lecture-format presentations and some rudimentary attempts at interactive workshops. throughout the course of the day, we will explore possibilities for more interactive presentation strategies, questions of access, power, and representation, and curricular support materials for educators working in a variety of settings with communities of varying privilege.

the format will be chatty, informal roundtable discussion with skilled facilitation, , high-speed brainstorms, and plenty of delicious, healthy treats!

questions to prompt our discussion may include, but are not limited to-

how can bees create a lasting, meaningful engagement with key issues for audiences in a short period of time?

how can we reach out to a multitude of communities?

how can bees & other radical educators engage most effectively with academia and academics?

what's unique/challenging/effective about educating for social justice using visual images?

what are the strengths/weaknesses of a lecture-presentation model?

what are the challenges/opportunites of a participatory-workshop model?

can we design different education strategies and materials for different audiences? if so, what does that look like?

how can we orient new presenters and facilitators (bees and non-bees) most effectively?

please rsvp to pollinators@beehivecollective.org as soon as you are able.
