How to organize in the face a food crisis: lessons learned from Cuba

Jul 26 2009 - 4:00pm
Jul 26 2009 - 6:00pm

A workshop by Colectivo Cosecha Solidaria / Solidarious Harvest Collective

With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989 the vast majority of the pesticides, petroleum and other agricultural inputs that made Cuba the most industrialized country in Latin America were suddenly cut off. As a result, the agricultural system was dramatically transformed towards a smaller scale, organic and local model. This presentation and slideshow deals with the transformation of the system, as well as an analysis of greenwashing and the cooptation of sustainability we see in the U.S. What does it mean when sustainability becomes a necessity for survival?

This is a participatory workshop, where we ask audience members to think critically about how we would organize in the face of a food crisis. Come ready to bring your ideas, experiences, and problem-solving.

Cosecha Solidaria is a group of women involved in the food justice movement who took a 3 week long trip to Cuba to learn about the transformation of their agricultural system. We work with the Student/Farmworker Alliance/CIW, Madre Tierra (Chiapas), Germantown Community Farm (NY), the Northeast Organic Farmers Association, and other organizations fighting for social, environmental, and economic justice.
